Building

Historic exterior photos of Prince of Wales Elementary and High School/ Shaughnessy Elementary School.

Prince of Wales Elementary and High School opened for classes on September 7, 1920, and was officially opened by BC Premier John Oliver on September 15, 1920. East and West wings were completed and opened for classes in September, 1922.

The school housed both elementary and high school populations, each group inhabiting respective halves of the school. Growth of the school population necessitated the separation of the elementary and secondary schools in 1960. The building of a new Prince of Wales Secondary School and the renaming of the former Prince of Wales to Shaughnessy Elementary School followed. The original building continues in this style today with a dedicated population of students, parents, teachers, and alumni, some of whom are multi-generational attendees.

Gym

Historic interior and exterior photos of the school gymnasium.

After decades of advocating for a dedicated physical education space, Prince of Wales Elementary and High School students and families finally saw their dream realized with the opening of the gymnasium in November, 1950. For our first thirty years, students participated in physical education outdoors if weather permitted, and in a small out-building fondly referred to as ‘the shack’ when it didn’t. To this day, Shaughnessy Elementary School students and teachers make daily use of the gym, and it remains the only full-sized elementary school gymnasium in Vancouver.
